Understanding your auto insurance policy

Your most important auto insurance document is the DECLARATION PAGE provided to you by your insurance company. This document, often called the “dec sheet”, tells you the monetary amounts of your insurance coverage. We will explain what the declaration page means and whether your coverages are adequate for your purposes.
The initial important item on the declaration page is BODILY INJURY. Opposite or under this heading an amount will appear and will read, for example, 25,000/50,000 or 100,000/300,000 or something similar. The first number (25,000 or 100,000) covers you for injuries you may have negligently caused to one person. The second number (50,000 or 300,000) covers you for injuries to multiple people caused by your alleged negligence in one accident. Sometimes you will find only one number on the and in that situation the amount is the most any one person can receive or the most any number of individuals injured in a single accident may receive. In any event, the numbers described are what protect you for negligent conduct engaged in by you. If damages go beyond these numbers YOU MAY be liable for the additional amounts. The amount of money you earn and your assets govern the amount that the limits of your liability insurance should be. If you are a relatively wealthy person, you should have high limits and consider an umbrella policy which will raise them further. A later blog will deal with umbrella policies and additional needs for high liability limits.
