WHAT IS THE NEW JERSEY HEALTH CARE CONSUMER INFORMATION ACT

As of June 23, 2004, the New Jersey Health Care Consumer Information Act became the law in New Jersey. This Act established a website for New Jersey consumers to check the credentials of their health care providers. All physicians and surgeons, optometrists and podiatrists are required to register and keep current the following information:

• Name of all medical schools attended and dates of graduation;
• Graduate medical education, including all internships, residencies and fellowships;
• Year first licensed;
• Year first licensed in New Jersey;
• Location of the physician’s or podiatrist’s office practice site or sites, as applicable;
• A description of any criminal convictions for crimes of the first, second, third or fourth degree within the most recent 10 years;
• A description of any disciplinary actions by the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners or disciplinary actions by other states within the last 10 years;
• A description of any revocation or involuntary restriction of the provider’s medical license within the last 10 years;
• Any malpractice judgments or settlements against the health care provider within the last 5 years.

Credentials for more than 32,500 doctors, podiatrists and optometrists are available on the Division of Consumer Affairs website. You can check your doctor’s record today at http://www.njconsumeraffairs.gov/bme/education/contedu.htm

While the records are not always up to date and require self-reporting, they do provide some very helpful information.
